In Ghana, unsustainable agricultural practices and illegal mining activities (known as galamsey) pose significant threats to cocoa production, a vital sector of the local economy.
These challenges lead to soil degradation and lower agricultural yields, which in turn impact rural communities that depend on cocoa as a primary source of income.
Wonfliki leverages GIS data, satellite imagery, and soil sampling to map major cocoa-producing regions and support sustainable agriculture in areas unaffected by illegal mining. This approach helps preserve land quality and ensures lasting yields for rural communities.
To expand the reach of Wonfliki and its impacts, we need to gather data in the Ashanti, Western, Western-North and Eastern Regions in Ghana. This will allow to map major cocoa-producing regions and support communities affected by illegal mining.
